Performance Update

Here is the April 2024 Performance Update:

April saw a sea of red in all the 5 robo advisors’ portfolios and the 3 benchmark indices. We saw that the robo advisors generally suffered smaller losses than the indices, with only Endowus and MoneyOwl performed worse than the MSCI ACWI index. StashAway returned to negative territory in terms of XIRR since inception.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices suffered losses in April 2024.
SquirrelSave suffered the smallest losses among the robo advisors, while MoneyOwl the largest losses.
StashAway returned to negative territory in terms of XIRR since inception after enjoying a brief period of positive XIRR in the previous month.

Performance Update

Here is the March 2024 Performance Update:

Another month of positive performance for the 5 robo advisors’ portfolios and the 3 benchmark indices. Except for Syfe monthly returns lagging slightly behind S&P 500, this month we saw that robo advisors’ portfolios performed better than the indices. StashAway managed to turn positive in terms of XIRR since inception.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices showed positive monthly returns in March 2024.
SquirrelSave had the highest monthly returns among the robo advisors.
StashAway just turned positive in terms of XIRR since inception.
Endowus marched above 6% in terms of XIRR since inception.
SquirrelSave was the only robo advisor remained in negative territory in terms of XIRR since inception.

Performance Update

Here is the February 2024 Performance Update:

February 2024 was a strong month for all 5 robo advisors’ portfolios and the 3 benchmark indices. Endowus took the lead with an almost 5% monthly returns, but still lagged behind S&P 500.

To be fair, Endowus portfolio holdings are globally diversified, which performed well against the 2 MSCI global indices.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices put up a strong performance in February 2024.
Endowus portfolio is the top performer among robo advisors, with this month returns almost 5% and XIRR since inception above 5%.
As for the benchmark indices, S&P 500 clocked in a respectable YTD returns above 8% and XIRR since inception above 9%.

Performance Update

Here is the January 2024 Performance Update:

2024 began with another month of all 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices in the black although the monthly returns were declining since November 2023. This round StashAway portfolio became the best performer among the robo advisors and Syfe dropped to the worst.

In terms of XIRR since inception, Endowus portfolio went above 4%, a near-risk-free floor rate of CPF Special Account (SA), but still below the closest benchmark MSCI World Index, not to mention S&P 500 Index achieved above 7% for the same period.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices remained in positive territory in January 2024.
Endowus portfolio remained the top performer with XIRR went above 4% since inception among robo advisors.
StashAway portfolio took the lead in monthly return in January 2024, while Syfe portfolio was the worst performer.

Here is the December 2023 Performance Update:

All the 5 robo advisor portfolios and the 3 benchmark indices continued the rebound from last month. This round MoneyOwl portfolio took the top spot in terms of monthly return, and the worst is StashAway portfolio. For the indices, MSCI World Index took the lead with S&P 500 the last in monthly return.

In terms of XIRR since inception, both Syfe and MoneyOwl portfolios have turned from negative to positive, and the best and worst are Endowus and SquirrelSave respectively.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices continued the rebound in December 2023.
Endowus portfolio remained the top performer in YTD return and XIRR since inception among robo advisors.
MoneyOwl portfolio took the lead in monthly return in December 2023, while StashAway portfolio was the worst performer.
Both Syfe and MoneyOwl portfolios have turned from negative to positive in XIRR since inception.
After 3 full years of experiment (excluding MoneyOwl and SquirrelSave portfolios which were added in April 2022), it seems like the robo advisor portfolios couldn’t gain an edge over the benchmark indices based on XIRR since inception.

November 2023 saw a strong rebound of all 5 robo advisor portfolios and 3 benchmark indices. Endowus portfolio retained its top performer position in monthly return, YTD return and XIRR since inception among the robo advisors, but still lost out to the indices.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices showed strong rebound in November 2023.
Endowus portfolio remained the top performer in monthly return, YTD return and XIRR since inception among robo advisors.
The other 4 robo advisor portfolios still stayed in negative territory for XIRR since inception.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices remained in negative territory.
SqurrelSave suffered the largest loss among the robo advisors, and StashAway the smallest loss.
Endowus portfolio remained the only robo advisor with XIRR since inception in the positive territory, albeit pretty close to turning red.

MoneyOwl Portfolio Transfer to iFAST

The transfer of the MoneyOwl Equity 100 portfolio (together with my other MoneyOwl portfolios) to iFAST was indeed done seamlessly. Each of my MoneyOwl portfolio was given a Personal Wrap Account in iFAST, and all the previous monthly account statements were found in the account inbox.

Performance Update

Here is the September 2023 Performance Update:

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices suffered a bigger drop in September 2023 than the previous month. Syfe portfolio’s XIRR since inception turned red, and only Endowus portfolio maintained in positive territory. And MSCI AWCI was the only index with XIRR turned negative.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices remained in negative territory.
Syfe continued to suffer the largest loss among the robo advisors, and the smallest loss goes to StashAway portfolio.
Endowus portfolio is the only robo advisor with XIRR since inception remained in the black.

MoneyOwl is Winding Down Their FA Business

On 31 August, MoneyOwl announced that they are winding down their financial advisory business by 31 December 2023. They will transfer their fund management business and insurance advisory business to iFAST Financial, and will wind down their Comprehensive Financial Planning service and Will-Writing service by 15 December 2023.

More details are available in their notice and press pelease.

How will this change affect this Robo War Experiment? Suffice to say that since the transfer to iFAST is supposed to be seamless, I will continue to keep the MoneyOwl Equity 100 portfolio and provide monthly performance update as usual.

Performance Update

Here is the August 2023 Performance Update:

After consecutive 5 months of positive returns in the 3 benchmark indices, all 5 robo advisors and 3 indices turned red in August 2023. Syfe suffered the largest drop, SquirrelSave the smallest loss among the robo advisors, and S&P 500 clocked in with a slight drop.

YTD returns remained above 10% for all, with Endowus and Syfe maintained their positive XIRR since inception.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices turned red in August 2023.
Syfe and SquirrelSave suffered the largest and smallest loss respectively among the robo advisors.
S&P 500 was the best performing index in the monthly return, YTD return and XIRR since inception.

Here is the July 2023 Performance Update:

July was yet another month in 2023 with all 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices turning in positive monthly performance. This round it was the Syfe portfolio and MSCI ACWI that clocked in the highest returns among the robo advisors and benchmark indices respectively.

In terms of XIRR since inception, all 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices had improved over the previous month. Endowus portfolio and S&P 500 index took the lead respectively.

Key Observations

All 5 robo advisors and 3 benchmark indices have positive returns in July 2023.
Syfe portfolio had the highest return of 2.37% among the robo advisors.
MSCI ACWI took the highest return of 1.75% among the indices.
Endowus XIRR since inception further improved to 3.34%.
All 5 robo advisors followed the positive trend in July 2023.
