About

My name is Tan Choong Hwee (for the benefits of non-Chinese readers, Tan is my surname and Choong Hwee is my given name). I am a Singapore Citizen with strong interests in personal wealth management.

My education and career background is not in finance, but in engineering. I had a Technician Diploma in Electronics & Communication Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic, a Bachelor Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, and a Master Degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.

My investment journey started with investing in an IPO in 1991. Since then, I had been dabbling with Singapore stocks listed on SGX. In 1993, I started trading US stocks because the company I worked for was listed in US, and I received company stock options which I exercised and traded the shares.

As my interests in stock investing grew, I read many stock investment books to learn about fundamental analysis and various investment strategies. In 2014, my interest turned to trading, and I began to trade CFDs, forex, indices, futures and options. I learnt about technical analysis and various trading strategies.

In 2019, I came across the 1M65 movement and realized that I could include CPF as part of my personal wealth management. I joined the 1M65 community set up by 1M65 founder Mr. Loo Cheng Chuan and became an active participant in various social media circles.

In 2020, I did a review and planning on my personal wealth and became interested in Core Satellite Portfolio Investment (CSPI) Strategy. The switch from individual stock pickings to portfolio investing led me to begin my journey into the world of robo advisors, ETFs and rediscover unit trusts.

In the same year, I joined the CPF Volunteering program, involved in learning and sharing about various CPF schemes, answering enquiry on CPF matters, clarifying any misunderstandings on CPF policies, etc.

In 2021, I joined the Seedly community. Again, involved in sharing my financial knowledge and answering enquiry from community members. I began my crypto investment and started sharing my crypto journey in Seedly.

From my involvement with the personal finance community, there were some often-asked questions on many personal finance matters, such as CPF, SRS, robo-advisors, unit trusts, ETFs, crypto, ILP, etc. Some hot topics were repeatedly asked, and I found it a bit of repetitions to address those topics. Hence the idea of consolidating relevant information into blog posts was born.

I have named this site Personal Wealth Life Cycle Management (PWLCM). The acronym is not exactly pronounceable, but if insist on pronouncing it, I would pick “PerLim”. My thinking is all financial matters are dealing with our own personal wealth, and our wealth can run through the life cycle of creation, accumulation, preservation, decumulation and distribution phases. So this site is my attempt to share my view on personal wealth management through the life cycle. The content will consist of various financial topics I learnt over the years as well as the experience I gained in some endeavors.

All these learning and sharings lead to my life motto: “Living a Restful, Blessful and Meaningful Life!”.

[6 February 2023 Update] I have started working at Providend as a Solutions Specialist, more details in “Return to Work“.
